Recorders

A recorder is essential for filmmakers, providing superior audio quality and flexibility compared to recording directly into a camera. It allows better microphone placement, clean sound, and the ability to handle multiple audio inputs simultaneously. Handy recorders are the best starting option, offering all-in-one functionality and versatility for most situations. For more advanced needs, field recorders are specialized tools designed for specific audio applications. Starting with a handy recorder ensures a solid foundation for achieving professional audio.

Handy Recorders

Zoom has discontinued its classic handy recorder lineup and replaced it with the Essential series, which is mediocre at best. These new recorders focus on 32-bit float recording and clipping XLR inputs but sacrifice build quality, interface usability, and versatility. Even for beginners, these models are a subpar choice. Audio is too critical to compromise on, and starting with a field recorder is often a better investment. The only remaining true handy recorder worth considering is the Zoom H8, which retains the quality and flexibility the older lineup was known for.

Best Handy Recorder

MAX 512GB The Zoom H8 is the only truly viable handy recorder for filmmaking. Audio quality is critical, and starting with Zoom's Essentials lineup is less than ideal. Those recorders rely solely on 32-bit float recording, which may sound convenient, but their mediocre preamps often introduce white noise. This forces you to clean up tracks in post-production, resulting in audio that can never match the quality of a clean, untouched recording. A recorder like the H8 avoids these pitfalls, giving you professional-grade audio right from the start. The Zoom H8 supports up to 8 channels: 6 XLR inputs with secure locking, a 3.5mm input, and a built-in detatchable XYH-6 stereo mic. The XY mic can be swapped with upgraded capsules for even better recording versatility. It includes a monitoring output for precise audio checks and records up to 24-bit, which is ideal if you properly set your levels. Mastering level adjustments not only prevents surprises but ensures consistent, high-quality recordings. The H8 is a powerful tool that can grow with your skills, making it a solid long-term investment.

Only viable option

MAX 512GB - 32GB is plenty While not a traditional handy recorder, this device offers groundbreaking 360-degree audio recording with four built-in mics in an ambisonics arrangement. It supports three versatile recording modes: ambisonics for immersive 360 audio, stereo binaural for realistic depth perception, and standard stereo. Features like onboard ambisonics A-to-B encoding/decoding, automatic mic position detection using a 6-axis motion sensor, and onboard ambisonics playback with audio rotation make this recorder a unique and advanced tool. This opens up exciting possibilities for both stereo and surround sound mixing, allowing you to capture every element of a soundscape. For instance, if you're shooting an outdoor scene in a forest, you can record a few minutes beforehand and later isolate or blend specific directions in post-production, aligning perfectly with the camera's perspective. This flexibility is invaluable for creating immersive soundtracks. However, this tool is not recommended for beginners. While its capabilities are impressive, mastering its complexities requires advanced skills and a solid understanding of audio workflows. For novices, it's better to focus on foundational filmmaking techniques and simpler tools to build confidence and creativity. Once you've honed your skills over two to three years, adding this recorder to your kit can significantly enhance your productions.

Alternatively, there is a 360-degree microphone from Rode that offers more precise and cleaner sound. Priced similarly to the Zoom H3-VR, the H3-VR provides greater convenience with built-in recording and a range of features that make handling 360 audio easier. However, for top-quality sound, the Rode 360 stands out, though it requires an external recorder via XLR and a bit more technical knowledge. Both options are viable depending on your needs.

Field Recorders

Field recorders share many functions with handy recorders, such as recording audio, offering multiple inputs, separate channels, headphone monitoring, amplifiers, and gain adjustment. However, they are distinct in one significant way: they lack built-in XY microphones for stereo recording. This omission actually serves a purpose, as field recorders are designed specifically for mobile and on-the-go use where compactness and portability are key priorities. Field recorders are notably smaller, more robust, and optimized for outdoor or location-based setups. They often feature minimalistic screens and streamlined controls to save space and reduce battery consumption, though powering them with an external USB battery pack is still advisable for longer sessions. These devices are built for durability, with designs that can handle the rigors of travel and fieldwork. One standout feature of field recorders is their inclusion of locking inputs, which provide a more secure connection for microphones and other audio equipment. This ensures cables won’t accidentally disconnect, a crucial advantage for mobile recording setups. While handy recorders are versatile and well-suited for studio or mixed use, field recorders excel in scenarios where portability, durability, and reliability are paramount.

Best Entry level

The Zoom F1-LP is arguably the best entry-level field recorder for filmmakers starting with a 3.5mm microphone. Its versatility extends beyond beginners, making it a valuable addition to even more advanced setups. Here's why: The F1 is an ultra-compact field recorder, small enough to fit in your pocket. It features a 3.5mm line input and output, both equipped with threading for secure cable connections, preventing accidental disconnections. It records audio at up to 24-bit/96 kHz, ensuring professional-grade quality. Additionally, the F1 supports Zoom’s modular attachments, allowing you to connect accessories like XY stereo microphones, shotgun mic capsules, or even an XLR module—though if you're considering XLR use, the Zoom F3 might be a better option. It’s designed for portability with a bottom screw mount and a belt clip, making it easy to secure on your person. Beyond its use as a lav mic recorder, it can function as an on-camera XY mic recorder with the appropriate module. This means you can effortlessly capture immersive 180-degree stereo sound directly synced with your camera's perspective. For instance, a car passing through the frame will have its sound seamlessly aligned with its movement on screen—all without the need for additional gear like tripods. The F1-LP bundle includes a lavalier microphone, providing excellent value for those looking to expand their audio capabilities with a compact, versatile, and reliable recorder.

Best Value

The Zoom F3 is the ultimate all-around recorder that every filmmaker should have in their kit. Compact and sturdy, it is designed for demanding production environments while delivering exceptional audio performance. Recording in true 32-bit float with excellent preamps, it ensures clean, dynamic sound and allows for adjustments in post-production without any unexpected surprises. With two locking XLR inputs, the F3 provides secure, reliable connections for professional-grade microphones. Its built-in belt rail enhances portability, making it easy to carry and access during shoots. Versatile and dependable, this recorder is perfect for small to large productions, combining durability, high-quality sound, and a practical design into one essential tool.

Best Overall

The Zoom F6 is a powerhouse recorder, ideal for both large studio productions and portable run-and-gun setups. Despite its compact size, it boasts six locking XLR inputs, each equipped with a dedicated gain dial—offering unmatched flexibility and control. What sets the F6 apart is its ability to record in both 32-bit float for dynamic range flexibility and 24-bit for precise level management, making it a perfect hybrid for a wide variety of filming scenarios. With support for four AA batteries, the F6 offers just enough juice to finish your takes if your external battery runs out. However, like all recorders, it’s best to run it on a portable external battery for reliability during longer shoots. Its built-in belt rail ensures portability, making it easy to clip onto your belt for seamless on-the-go operation. Beyond its robust inputs and flexibility, the F6 also features dual SD card slots for redundancy, and customizable presets for quick setup in various shooting conditions. Compact, durable, and feature-packed, the Zoom F6 is an essential tool for filmmakers who need a versatile recorder capable of handling both big productions and nimble, dynamic shoots.

Higher end

The Zoom F8n Pro is a powerhouse and arguably the pinnacle of portable recorders. With 8 locking XLR inputs and the ability to record both 32-bit float and 24-bit/192 kHz audio, it offers the highest level of quality and flexibility. It’s designed for filmmakers who need top-tier sound capture without compromise. While it's larger than the F6 and lacks direct belt-mounting, its portability is still maintained with the right carry bags, making it versatile for on-the-go shoots. The F8n Pro also includes advanced features like timecode synchronization, dual SD card slots for redundancy, and customizable gain control for each channel, ensuring you have total control over your audio. For those who demand the best in multi-channel recording with professional-grade audio quality, the Zoom F8n Pro is an unrivaled choice. At this level, paying more is often for the sake of additional, niche features, but the F8n Pro offers everything needed for large-scale productions, making it a must-have for serious filmmakers.

Modules

Modules are an excellent way to expand and customize your recorder’s functionality. They allow you to tailor your setup to specific needs, whether it's attaching an XY microphone for stereo recordings, a shotgun mic for focused audio capture, or an XLR input module to increase compatibility with professional microphones. This flexibility makes recorders with modular options highly adaptable, enabling you to tackle a wide range of audio recording scenarios with the same base device.

Windscreen

Windscreens and furry covers (commonly called deadcats) are essential accessories for minimizing unwanted noise during recordings. Windscreens are ideal for indoor use to reduce plosive sounds and light air movement. For outdoor environments, furry covers are a must, as they effectively block wind noise while preserving audio clarity. While some recorders come with these accessories included, others, such as the Zoom H8, currently lack dedicated options. However, many universal covers are available and can often fit well. Be sure to equip your recorder with the appropriate wind protection based on your recording conditions to ensure clean, professional audio.

Case & Bags

While a dedicated section on our site covers general-purpose bags, Zoom offers specific cases tailored for their equipment. The best options are functional cases designed for use during shoots, featuring holes or cutouts to access controls while recording. Additionally, individual storage bags are useful for organizing gear that isn’t frequently used, preventing mix-ups and protecting equipment that doesn’t fit well in standard bags. For broader needs, general multipurpose bags provide enough space and flexibility to carry a mix of equipment efficiently. These tailored options ensure better organization and protection for your recording gear.
